Drage sudionice i sudionici SPLIT FOTO SALONA 2022,
Maja Prgomet, predsjednica SPLIT FOTO SALONAENG
Dear participants,
following the example of many other reputable and renowned salons of photography in Croatia and the world, Photo Club Split has been thinking and discussing the launch of an international photography salon for a long time. There were more than enough reasons for this: photography in Split has a long tradition whose importance is recognized in both national and European contexts, and Photo Club Split has played an important, if not key role, in promoting photography and shaping the local photography scene in its 111-year history.
Despite the difficult and challenging times, we decided that this year was the right time to finally turn our idea into reality. This is how the SPLIT PHOTO SALON was created, the first international photography salon in Split. A competition was opened for both professionals and amateurs who were able to submit their photos in three categories: open black and white theme, open colour theme, and women’s category. The works were then evaluated by a jury of experts composed of renowned photographers from Croatia and the region: Jelena Janković, Jasmina Gorjanski, Haris Čalkić, Petar Sabol and Branimir Ritonja. All works were reviewed anonymously and impartially, then the winners were selected by categories as each member attributed a mark to each work. Alongside winners, three authors in each category were awarded an honourable mention, and the exhibition in the Photo Gallery of the Photo Club Split will feature 75 best-rated photographs, 25 from each category. The jury did not have an easy task, a statement supported by the fact that the winners were chosen from 1172 photographs (420 in the colour category, 377 in the black and white category and 375 in the women’s category), submitted by 121 authors from 8 countries.
It is a great pleasure to see that the first edition of the Salon has generated such a great interest in authors from Croatia and Europe, and it was a special pleasure to see many prominent and renowned names among those who decided to participate and send their photos. The success of the first edition of the Split Photo Salon is a great encouragement, both for me personally and for the entire Photo Club Split, which labels the city of Split as an important and unavoidable spot in contemporary photography by organizing such events. I am looking forward to the years ahead that will bring more great editions and excellent photos, and that the Split Photo Salon will grow into a traditional event and a trademark of both the Photo Club Split and the city of Split.
